Seraphine collected black. Not out of mourning, she'd say, out of certainty. Black was the only colour that never apologised. So when her father left her a little money and a note that read buy something you'll still want at sixty, she didn't go looking for diamonds on their own. She went looking for the dark between them.
She found it on a wet Thursday in a shop that smelled of polish and old velvet: a line of jet black onyx, each stone squared off and gleaming like the surface of deep water, with created diamonds set between them, catching whatever light the afternoon could spare. Against yellow gold it looked less like jewellery and more like a decision.
She wore it to the interview she nearly cancelled. She wore it to the dinner where she said no, finally, and meant it. Somewhere along the way it stopped being an heirloom and became a habit, the thing she fastened without looking while the taxi waited.
Her niece asks about it now. Seraphine tells her the truth, which is the least romantic and most useful version: it goes with everything, it never looks like it's trying, and it has been on her wrist for every good decision she ever made.
Black onyx does something no clear stone can. Against a warm yellow gold finish it reads as pure contrast, a run of midnight set between points of light, and it turns a classic tennis bracelet into something with a little more nerve. Onyx has always been the stone of composure: protection, focus, willpower. Paired with created diamonds it keeps the sparkle of a traditional tennis line while swapping prettiness for presence.
