Vivienne's Bracelet
Vivienne had opinions about corners. Round things were lovely, she'd allow, but a square stone had an edge to it, a little architecture, and she had never once in her life wanted to look soft. So when she finally replaced the bracelet she'd worn thin through two decades of teaching, she chose princess cut, and she chose sapphire, and she chose it on a Saturday with nobody's permission but her own.
Her students used to watch the light run along it while she wrote on the board. One of them told her, years later at a reunion, that it was the first time she'd understood that a woman could be serious and glittering at the same time.
Princess cut sapphires sit shoulder to shoulder here, square faced and sharply faceted, alternating with created diamonds so the line reads as a continuous ribbon rather than a row of dots. Set in a warm yellow gold finish, the deep blue looks less like jewellery and more like stained glass.
